North Island Shield Challenges - Ladies

2006 Hutt Valley
2007 Kapi Mana

It seems that for many years our players had fought for the right to call the shield their own and after securing victory over Hutt Valley in 2006  the shield has hung in pride and place of the main darts room wall at the Wainui RSA for the past seven months.  The week prior to out first challenge I had the pleasure of ensuring Wainuiomata was clearly etched in its rightful place on the shield.  It would have been a shame to forget to mark our name in history.

The North Island Shield is a New Zealand Darts Council Trophy and upon examining the shield the first notable challenge was in 1969.  It’s amazing to think this trophy has been contested for nearly 40 years and Wainuiomata Darts has contributed to its history as challengers, victors and defending champions.

The ladies from Kapi Mana came in hot pursuit of the North Island Shield Trophy on Sunday 29th April 2007.  You could only sit back and admire the exuberance of their players and supporters as they gave us a lesson of what team work is all about.

Kapa Mana ladies shared a balance of experience and young blood in their teams with their pairing combinations working suitably on the day.  Kapi A held a strong lead all the way through holding our girls out to a 20-4 victory.  The B team had a harder fought battle on their hands holding on until the last game to win 13-11 over Wainuiomata.  A total victory to Kapi Mana 33-15.

Many of our ladies experienced for the first time the pressure of being exposed to a wide spread audience.  Peering eyes, loud cheering and high expectations contributed to the frustrations of the game not to mention the doubles, where are the doubles when you want them.  No hard luck stories here folks, just another notch in our experience and depth of character.    The Wainuiomata Ladies should be admired for their determination and efforts.

We thank all the supporters who came along with or without a green shirt, and enjoyed a bevy or two and a great afternoon of darts.  We thank Kapi Mana Ladies for their great display of darts and wish them well for their future challenges.
